Release #5 is out!

Finally Release #5 is out, almost 6 month after the original release. The most important changes are:

  • The field of vision is now limited by light (in unlit rooms). And the ‘range’ attribute has been replaced by a ‘light’ attribute.
  • Lots of new items and changed items due to the changed attributes.
  • The ability to make character sheets (aka morgue-files, character-dumps) from the main menu.
  • New abilities for the player and for monsters.
  • The target cursor changes colour depending on how likely you are to hit in ranged combat.

The full changelog can be found here. The manual will gradually be updated to release #5, but it will take a while.

I really hope you do enjoy the new release. I’d appreciate any feedback (especially on the new attribute) to be able to make the game better in the future. For now, I wish you all happy holidays!

  1. So I’ve tried out the new version for just a bit today, and there’s something I don’t quite get: I see the light mechanic and reduced FOV working properly occasionally, but why are so many rooms still unlimited FOV? Seems like there’s nothing at all about the terrain to differentiate them from the other rooms (like, their not “brightly lit” or anything, just the same old stone floor). This is what you intended then? Somewhat odd given how everything else about how the game works is so transparent.

    1. Right, so especially on the early levels most rooms are lit up by default and technically any tile can be lit or dark (so itโ€™s not a property of the tile, thatโ€™s why it doesnโ€™t show). The deeper you get, the more of the rooms will be dark. This is more or less the same mechanics as in Angband (where you also have some rooms lit up by default). I hope that explains it.

      1. Ah yes, it’s been so long I forgot I’d read on your blog about darkness being affected by depth. (Never played Angband before.) I guess I’ll get used to it, we’ll see. Need to play some more.

  2. The XP version crashed as soon as I launched it in XP, with error code C000001D (illegal instruction). Something to do with PDcurses I think.

      1. The Win8 version “is not a valid win32 application” and version 4 crashes with the same error. Sorry about this. Source code?

        1. Sad to hear… I really have no idea what the problem can be then. I’m going to try look it over and compile a new version. Thanks for reporting!

I’m sorry, but I’m not ready to release the source code at this point (and no promises I ever will). I’ll get back to you when I have a new build.

  3. Love the new release. I like the new bloodlust mechanic. A minor bug, I found amulet of resistance upgrades to a worse amulet at the Jeweller. Also it lists rAcid as an “Ability” which I don’t think it is. Great game.

        1. Ouch, you’re right… The longbow is supposed to give one more ‘Missile’ than the light bow. Thanks for reporting, will be fixed!

    1. Hmm.. but you cannot unequip it when you have used up your mana right? Did you find a way to abuse it like before?

      1. Yeah, I did. Sorry ๐Ÿ˜‰
It can’t be unequiped when mana=0, but it restores your mana pool if you replace it with other item in the inventory before using magic.
        Here is the save (Win8) – http://en.file-upload.net/download-10032627/slot0.html
You have lantern, spellbook and battleaxe, also wand off missiles and ghoul nearby. So if you shoot ghoul with equiped lantern untill MP=0, all you need is equip the spellbook and then repalce it with the battleaxe clicking by on the battleaxe from inventory. This will restore base mana. Then you can equip lantern again and shoot ghoul to death. Repeat.

        1. Ah thanks! The bug here is that you are not supposed to be able to equip the battleaxe over the spellbook there. Apparently I still haven’t covered all cases. Thank you very much for the savefile and the details, I will fix it, and sorry for the bug ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. Hi, I love so much your game that I did a kind of Let’s Playโ€ฆin english ! The first LP in english on our french channel.
And of course I used ZeBlob image as a theme ๐Ÿ™‚
I did also 2 videos in french to explain your game and show it to french roguelikers.
Hope you’ll enjoy it, and I’m planning to do more videos on TGGW with one rule: to play only one time no matter what. So it could lead to 20sec video or 30min or more.
    Here is the playlist

    1. Hey Guryushika! Thank you very much for this! I really appreciate the videos and that you help with letting people know about the game! It was very entertaining and interesting to follow the video in English and I look forward to any future videos. Thanks man ๐Ÿ™‚
